What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is when people hide trinkets or slips of paper in small containers. They plug the coordinates or clues into a website or downloaded app. Others use this information to find the containers, better known as geocaches.

Our family is always on the lookout for fun, different activities, especially those that promote healthy living. We have found one in geocaching and below are my top reasons why.

1. Exercise

Whether you’re covering more ground on bikes, or walking, geocaching can provide purpose to your exercise. You will be so busy searching for those hidden gems that you easily forget you’re doing something really great for your body.

2. Teamwork

Some may enjoy using the geocaching app to find the cache’s exact location. Some may enjoy looking through every nook and cranny in search of hidden treasure. There really is something for everyone, and I soon found myself marveling at how my son rooted for his sister, how my daughter high-fived my husband. It is a really simple way to insert an opportunity for teamwork within your family.

3. Nature

There is something so rejuvenating about getting back to nature. The caches are hidden EVERYWHERE. Some are attached to tree branches. Some are hidden inside stumps. Some are tucked beneath bridges. One thing for sure is that the scenery is gorgeous.

4. Educational

As previously mentioned, our children eagerly used an app that displayed the cache’s location. So, they were seeing what landmarks look like on an aerial map. They were becoming familiar with words like coordinates and direction. They were even understanding that maps have real purpose. There are numerous ways to authentically insert education, while keeping it light and fun.

5. Economical

I’m always for the economical activity. These days, doing anything with a family of four is pricey. Geocaching is one of those rare activities that is truly fun but won’t break the bank. The app my husband downloaded was free. You can bring a few trinkets to replace the ones you find, and my son already had those. You’re saving money without feeling slighted. It really is a win-win.
