Welcome to all our Mom’s Choice readers! Today we’re excited to speak with Makida H. Arshi, RN, BSN—who is both an author and a full-time nurse. She recently garnered a Mom’s Choice Award for The World Needs a Uniquely Happy You—a heartwarming and empowering children’s book that celebrates being true to one’s self and the importance of embracing one’s unique qualities. The story, which follows the journey of young protagonists as they discover and embrace their own special talents and characteristics, is beloved by readers ages 5 to 9 and celebrates girls pursuing their own dreams.

MCA: Makida, please tell us about yourself.

I am an author and a nurse from Virginia. I am of Ethiopian descent and I live with my husband, Dr. Ismael Yussuf, and my three wonderful daughters Hira, Nina, and Ayah. I love to write, as it gives my thoughts and ideas an outlet, as well as helping me to help others with my reassuring energy. My main audience is young girls, whom I am passionate about convincing that they should grow up to be whoever they want to be. And I love spending time with my family and I enjoy crafts—sewing, stitching, crochet and knitting.

MCA: You have so many different interests—what was your path to becoming a writer like? What inspired you?
My journey to becoming a writer was deeply influenced by my surroundings and personal experiences. The inspiration for my writing came from the rich tapestry of life around me and my own unique story. I felt a strong calling to write children’s books as a way to share my perspective and contribute to the world of literature, hoping to engage young minds and inspire them.

MCA: What was your inspiration for writing The World Needs a Uniquely Happy You?
Women always struggle with societal expectations. I am one of them. At certain points, I have had to make the choice between working, staying at home to look after my children, or both! None of it was an easy decision. I have spoken to women from different walks of life. We share the same struggle. Furthermore, our world is becoming increasingly divided. And I said to myself, “I have to do something. At least I have to contribute my share.” Then I decided to write a children’s book, and that’s how The World Needs a Uniquely Happy You was born.

MCA: What are some of the key lessons found in the book?

In our increasingly divided world, The World Needs a Uniquely Happy You fosters an inclusive mindset. It not only helps children to recognize their own uniqueness but also teaches them to appreciate the uniqueness of others. By nurturing respect and compassion, this book contributes to developing a respectful, inclusive, and compassionate society.

MCA: If you could ensure readers of your book walk away with one main lesson, what would it be?

Appreciate your uniqueness and respect others. Pursue your dream with unwavering determination to achieve your goal and be a trailblazer.

MCA: Inclusivity, uniqueness, and compassion are such important lessons for children. What kind of responses have you gotten about your book

I have received overwhelmingly positive responses from parents, librarians and educators. They appreciate the uplifting message and encouragement to embrace one’s uniqueness.

MCA: What is next for your writing endeavors—are you perhaps working on another book that follows on the lessons of Uniquely Happy?

I have two more children’s books that I am working on. I am so grateful and blessed to do what I am doing at this time

MCA: It’s been such a pleasure speaking with you today. We wish you the very best with your new projects!
