My Nana Was A Free-Range Kid: By Nancy Peek Youngdahl
Written by Nancy Peek Youngdahl; Illustrated by Victor Guiza; Edited by Outskirts Press

In the 1940s and 50s, children were allowed to run free, play outside, and use their imaginations, without parents constantly hovering over them and fearing for their safety. It was a glorious time to be a child! Nana’s stories which are told to her great-grandchildren, are all true. “My Nana Was A Free Range Kid” is a valuable children’s book and encourages respect of elders which is beneficial today, even if those old days were “weird”.

You will love 8-year-old Adalee’s way of story-telling and her expressions of love for her great-grandparents and the contagious joy for the stories she shares. That joy brings such honor to our older generation as well. The stories tie in many different lessons in what “not to do” and the different themes throughout the book will surely hold imagination long beyond the last page. Family history is a very valuable commodity! It is not often that we see a children’s book with content of substance.

Fred Gift Set Includes “Sideways Fred” – Story About Determination, Folkmanis Puppet, 18×18 Canvas & Wall Decal

Each removable wall decal features an illustration from one of our story books. As your child becomes familiar with the stories, the decals will reinforce the conversations you have about the book or from the Go Beyond section. The canvases are great for developing your child’s imagination, encouraging your child to embellish the stories with their own details. Begin by reading each page of rhyme, talk through what you see in the drawing in the story book associated with what you have just read. As your child begins to talk, go to the wall decal that matches the story and point to the picture. This helps your child learn to apply the vocabulary they are building to the world around them. The wall paintings are also designed for early learning of colors and shapes. Your child will have fun using the puppet to act out scenes from the story as well as develop his or her own adventures for the puppet.

As children grow, they begin to understand many concepts. Conversations about the stories will help your child develop critical thinking skills and learn how to make good choices. Activities in the Go Beyond section of each book, including the Stop & Think page, will give you many ways to talk through the process of making choices based on a growing sense of empathy and an understanding of consequences.
