He Proclaimed His Love For His Childhood Best Friend At Three, Twenty Years Later He Proposes

This past Spring, as a five-year-old in her final year of preschool, my daughter came home from school one day exclaiming that a boy in her class wanted to marry her. “That’s so silly, why did he say that?” she asked me as she giggled. The idea is hilarious and absolutely foreign to her.

I imagine this is the type of reaction that Laura Scheel had when her preschool BFF Matt Grodsky proclaimed the same thing to her, in front of all the kids in her class, 20 years ago.

Grodsky shared their love story on the popular Instagram page The Way We Met. He writes, ““Laura and I met in preschool. One of my very first memories is of being 3 years old and standing up in front of my preschool class, declaring that I would marry her someday.” He details all of the things that the two learned how to do together, including riding bikes and eating string cheese the correct way. But, as is so common with childhood friends, a move tore them apart.

“For the next seven years, our family’s annual Christmas cards was the only way we ever saw each other’s faces. It wasn’t until High School that we reconnected by happenstance through a mutual friend. Within two weeks, we decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend.” And from that moment on, they were inseparable, at least in their hearts. They dated through high school, attended 15 dances together, and even survived going off to college at two separate universities states (and over 1,000 miles) apart.

Talk about true love.

On May 23, 2015, Matt took Laura to have a picnic for what she thought was celebrating their completion of Junior year of college. Matt had something entirely different planned, though. He took her to where it all began: the preschool where they first met. Laura had no idea that months ago Matt had bought a ring and received her dad’s blessing. So there, in the same place he proclaimed his deep love for her at three-years-old, Matt proposed, and Laura said yes.

On December 30, 2016, they tied the knot, making good on their promise from decades ago. Matt, who somehow knew deep down in his three-year-old heart that Laura was the one, received all he’s ever wanted, and Laura gets to marry her lifelong best friend.

Matt’s uncle, who officiated the marriage, declared so eloquently: “For most kids in preschool, it’s about finding your snacks and your sleeping mats, but for them it was about finding their soulmates.”

From now on, maybe I’ll consider taking my daughter a little more seriously when she talks about marriage proposals in her preschool class. After all, you never know.
