Mothers Need Correct Advice for Their Child's Dental HealthMy experience has made me realize that mothers often do not receive the correct advice regarding their child’s dental health and how to prevent tooth decay in all of their children.  Over 10 years ago my company did a consumer survey for a product that we had developed. We asked the following question to the mothers who participated. “Where do you receive your information or guidance to help you give your child good dental health?” Here are the results in order of importance:

  1. My own mother
  2. My pediatrician or family physician
  3. My friends and peers
  4. My dentist
  5. The internet.

My guess would be that advice would be closer to the top of the list. Please note that pediatric dentists are not listed.  Unfortunately, oftentimes the advice is incorrect, and I will give you examples of this.  I interview mothers every day in my practice and ask them this question, “How did you decide when to bring your child for their dental visit?” The vast majority will answer 3 years of age.  This is why:

1)  Their mothers will tell the new mom what they were told to do.

Twenty years ago the standard recommendation was the first dental visit was to be at 3 years of age.  Fifteen years ago the recommendation of the Academy of Pediatricians and the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry was changed to 12-15 months of age for the first dental examination.

2)  Only 50% of all physicians recommend the one-year of age dental exam.

Those that do will recommend that the child should see their dentist, not specify a pediatric dentist.

3)  Most of the mothers’ friends will do the same thing that their mother recommends.

Only 38% of all adults in America see a dentist annually for a regular dental check-up. The lowest demographic of this group is 21 to 35 years of age adults who are having children of their own.

4)  95% of all dentists in America do not want to see children under 4 years of age for their dental exam.

They will tell you to wait until your child is old enough to “sit still.”

5)  Advertising on the internet is there to sell products or serve the purpose of the advertising company.

Often the advice is not accurate.

Dr. Branams Xylitol Products Company

My company was created for multiple reasons, all based on necessity. I felt a need to do this as a result of all my experiences throughout 40 years of practicing pediatric dentistry. Tooth decay has decreased in every age group of Americans in the last 20 years EXCEPT children 2 to 5 years of age, and this can be reversed.  To reverse this trend, the general public must have:

  1. The correct information to make the proper decision
  2. The healthy, safe, and effective products that will give the child the best possible chance to have a healthy mouth and minimal tooth decay.
Dr. Branams Xylitol Toothpaste and Gels are:
  • PROPERLY FORMULATED to be effective
  • Safe to swallow at any age and should be left in the mouth after brushing
  • All-natural and gluten-free
  • Taste good so the children will like using them
  • Tested in a clinical to PROVE their effectiveness
  • Reduces tooth decay and also improves your oral health
  • Is 3 times better than Fluoride for reducing tooth decay
  • Can improve the oral health of the entire family
  • Will save the family significant dental expenses
  • Decrease the need for extensive dental treatment which means a better dental experience for your child.

The CORRECT advice for mothers is to begin brushing their infant’s teeth when the first tooth comes into the mouth by using Dr. Branams Xylitol gels.  The mothers and fathers should brush their own teeth in the last trimester of pregnancy and after; so they will not transfer their own tooth decay-causing bacteria to their newborn. Take your child or children to their first dental exam to a PEDIATRIC DENTIST at one year of age. Lastly, I recommend that all mothers and fathers have an annual regular dental check-up to maintain their own good dental health.
