Mom’s Choice Awards is excited to announce another post in our interview series where we chat with the inventors, designers, publishers, and others behind some of our favorite family-friendly products.
Hello, Mom’s Choice readers! Thank you for joining us for another interview featuring one of our MCA honorees! The honoree we were able to sit down with today is the creator of the MCA award-winning Spatty Beauty Set, Cheryl Rigdon! The Beauty Spatty Tools are a must-have beauty product! Spatty solves the problem of not being able to get your beauty products out of the container when it is no longer easy to get out. Spatty fits into virtually any beauty product on the market: foundation, lipgloss, lotion, etc. Keep reading to find out more about Cheryl and her incredible product, Spatty Beauty Set!
MCA: Hi Cheryl, thank you for joining us today, and congratulations on your Mom’s Choice Award! I have to say Beauty Spatty Tools are so useful and have become an essential part of my makeup bag. I can’t tell you how many bottles of makeup I’ve thrown out over the years simply because the product would no longer come out. Can we start this interview off by finding out a little bit about yourself?
Cheryl: I have two degrees. I have an undergraduate degree in Special Education and a Master’s Degree in Speech and Language Pathology. I have been married to my husband, who served our country in the United States Marine Corps, for 13 years. We have two wonderful little girls ages 6 and 3. We had our second little girl through IVF. I worked as a Speech and Language Pathologist for 9 years and continued working full time as a Speech and Language Pathologist during the first couple of years after I founded my company. In my free time, I love spending time with my husband, daughters, and my parents and going on trips. I do not really have any hobbies but I like to take photos and love looking back at the memories we have made. An interesting fact about me is that I wanted to be a Marine Biologist and study sharks. I am still interested in sharks and my husband and I even swam in sharks in the Bahamas.
MCA: We share the love of picture taking! Being able to look back at all the memories is truly a gift that keeps on giving. Tell us about the creation of your company!
Cheryl: My company is Spatty! Spatties are money-saving multiuse miniature spatulas that fit into virtually any product on the market and get you every last drop of product! Spatties are also great for spreading, mixing, decorating, removing excess product, getting the product into hard-to-reach places, and great to use so you keep your fingers and nails clean and out of your product!
I created the first Spatty one night when I was getting ready to go on a date night with my husband and I could not get any more makeup out of my foundation bottle. I had turned the bottle over and banged it on my hand and had gotten everything out that was going to come out but it was not enough to finish my makeup. I was frustrated because I could tell there was still a lot of makeup in the bottle. I used a Q-tip but the cotton soaked up the makeup and left little pieces of cotton on my face. I then got on the internet and tried to find something to buy to get my makeup out with and there was nothing. So I decided to make something myself! I was tired of throwing away makeup and not getting my money’s worth!
I created the Spatty in my kitchen and took this handmade Spatty onto ABC’s Shark Tank! The Sharks and the Shark Tank viewers loved Spatty! Over 1.2 million Spatties have been sold since I created the first hand made Spatty in my home.
Spatty currently has four different categories of Spatties: Beauty, Kitchen, Craft, and Home/Auto. Spatty also makes Spatty Caddies that you can store your Spatties in.
Spatty has been featured on: Shark Tank, Good Morning America, The View, Strahan, Sara, and KeKe, Dr. Oz The Good Life, Allure, Glamour, Seventeen, Women’s World, Buzz Feed, Bustle, Newsmax, and many others!
MCA: What needs were you trying to fill when you created Spatty Beauty Set?
Cheryl: I originally created the 6” Spatty to get my foundation out of the bottle. I later made the 12” Spatty for getting lotion out of a bottle. The 6” and 12” Spatty make up the Spatty Beauty Set. The 6” Spatty is great for any of your smaller beauty products (i.e. foundation, eye creams, face lotion, etc) and the 12” Spatty is great for your larger beauty products (i.e. body lotion, sunscreen, conditioner, etc). Consumer Reports study shows there is up to 25% of product left in the bottle when it is no longer easy to get out. Spatty solves this problem. Thanks to Spatty you can use all of your products! No more waste and more money in your pocket!
MCA: That’s something I think every beauty lover can get behind. I’ve tried the 6″ Spatty and it has worked wonders, I’ll have to try the 12″ next! Tell us about the research that went behind the Spatty Beauty Set.
Cheryl: I tried out several different shapes for the tip of the Spatty. I first tried a cupped shape but you could not spread the product and then you also had to use your fingers or something else to get the product out of the cupped shape tip and this defeated the purpose of not having to use your fingers and keeping your nails clean. I then tried a harder plastic that was not flexible enough to move around the corners of the bottle. I tried a spatula-like tip that was made of silicone and it worked really good but the tip would come off of the handle. I had a meeting with a mold maker and owner of a plastic injection company and we found a plastic/rubber material that I use now that is flexible but also not too flexible so it can remove product from corners, sides, and the bottom of containers and it also adheres to the Spatty handle so the tip will not come off.
Cheryl: Yes! I am so grateful and thankful for the opportunity I had to be on Shark Tank! Shark Tank gave Spatty national exposure and through this exposer, I received enough pre-sales to pay for the mold and first production run! Shark Tank also provided me with great contacts! Daymond John and his team have been so wonderful to work with and I am very grateful and thankful for our partnership as well!
Shark Tank has made Spatty known around the world!
MCA: Wow, congratulations! That experience must have been nerve-wracking and also so fulfilling. What kind of feedback have you received about Spatty Beauty Set?
Cheryl: I get great feedback about the Spatty Beauty Set. People are always surprised with how much product is left in the container and how many more uses they can get by using Spatty!
From the feedback I got from my customers I have created new products like Spatty Lip for lip gloss and lipstick as well as a concealer and Spatty Caddy, containers for the Spatty.
Here is one of my favorite reviews:
Fall 2019, I discover the Spatty courtesy of @empties.likemysoul. I watched so many people adore @thespatty, but I convinced myself I didn’t need it. I could easily use brushes or my finger to get the leftover product out of a bottle. I had already been doing that, it was messy but worked for the most part. Well last week, I decided to say 🤬 it, make myself happy and get it. WOW, I was so so surprised at how much I love this wonderful scooping device. I have had it for less than a week and have already used it so much.
Here we have an empty cleanser bottle and the product I was able to scoop out. it looked completely empty before I spatty’d it but I was able to fill an entire sample cup (probably 3-4 uses).
If you want to maximize your products and reduce your waste, I HIGHLY recommend adding this baby to your collection. The $10 pays for itself so quickly!! Honey jump on this bandwagon RIGHT now!!!
MCA: What is next for Spatty Beauty Set?
Cheryl: I am in the process of getting Spatty Beauty Set into more US retail stores in 2021 as well as take Spatty Beauty Set international in 2021.
MCA: That is very exciting, we will certainly be on the lookout for them! Thank you for a great interview, Cheryl.
