Greetings, Mom’s Choice readers! We hope this finds you well- thanks for joining us for another installment of our interview series. We were honored to speak with Mom’s Choice Award-winning Author Cali Meyrignac, who wrote the MCA award-winning book, Love Nursery Rhymes. Keep reading to learn more about Cali and her journey to becoming an award-winning author!
MCA: Hi Cali! Thank you for allowing us to get to know a little more about the author behind Love Nursery Rhymes! This MCA award-winning book was such a fun read and I hope this interview gives readers a chance to see how such a creative book got its start! Can you start by sharing a little bit about yourself?”
Cali: I was born and raised in Paris. I studied in Beijing and worked in Singapore. I got married in Greece, then gave birth to my daughter, Margaux (4), and my son, Julien (2.5) and now my husband and I raise them in Los Angeles.
I originally trained as an engineer. I worked in investment banking for many years, working on three different continents and worked for Disney in Los Angeles. My passion has always been reading and I wanted to share my love of books with my children. I created Cali’s Books when my daughter was 6 months old. I decided to leave the world of investment banking and make Cali’s Books my full-time job and I’ve never been happier. Cali’s Books is now a Los Angeles based publishing house committed to creating content and making books for babies and children who love reading and music. We have created 18 titles and sold 30,000 books.
MCA: You are very well-traveled! What an interesting and accomplished life you have led! To go from engineering, to investment banking, and now you’re an award-winning author. It’s nice to know that your role with Cali’s Books is the best one yet! Can you tell us a little more about your background with music and nursery rhymes?
Cali: Raising my children in a trilingual environment, I watched as my children developed new language and vocabulary through nursery rhymes. My personal observations in this were confirmed through scientific research showing how important music, nursery rhymes, and songs are in the development of speech and language for children and babies.
MCA: Such a fun and creative way to learn a language! You had stated that your passion has always been reading and you wanted to share your love of books with your children. Would you say that your children are who inspired you to write Love Nursery Rhymes?
Cali: My children were my first inspiration. I always noticed that they were more willing to do things when they were associated with a song. Love is the best inspiration for creation.
MCA: Love is definitely the best inspiration for creation. You touched on this a little already, but can you tell us more about the importance of music and nursery rhymes for babies, toddlers, and young children?
Cali: As I had mentioned, there has been extensive scientific research done on the importance of music on language and speech development in babies and children. Studies have also shown music to be more calming than speech for infants, as well as more effective in delaying the onset of crying. Music and nursery rhymes have also been proven to help babies and children develop their social skills, verbal and non-verbal communication skills at all stages (infant, toddler, school-aged), sensory development, and coordination, among many other benefits!
MCA: Very interesting! As you mentioned, music has a lot of benefits for infants, toddlers, and school-aged children. What was the thought process in choosing the songs that were included in Love Nursery Rhymes?
Cali: I wanted to mix well-known tunes that may be familiar to both babies/children and their parents with new ones that we created just for the book!
MCA: I must say, they were great choices! The illustrations within Love Nursery Rhymes are also amazing. What was the reasoning behind the use of mostly animals for the illustrations within Love Nursery Rhymes?
Cali: I like using animals because it allows all readers to feel included. My hope is that no child reads Cali’s Books and ever feels left out.
MCA: What kind of response from readers have you received?
Cali: The emails I receive from my readers are what keep me moving forward. Every day I receive emails from parents and grandparents telling me how much their children/grandchildren love reading my books. It is the fuel that keeps Cali’s Books going!
MCA: That is truly a great feeling. With all these accomplishments, what is next for Cali’s Books?
Cali: Right now we have 18 titles available. We have 16 more titles in the works that will be released soon. I’m especially excited for the Star Spangled Banner book!
MCA: Well, we cannot wait to read them! Please let us know when they are released!
