April is Autism Awareness Month

According to a recent report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of 88 children in the U.S. has an autism spectrum disorder.

New data indicates autism is more common than previously thought - about 25 percent more common - and may affect more than one million families in the U.S.

At Mom's Choice, we are keenly aware of this growing concern. Each year we evaluate hundreds of products, services and other resources designed for especially for parents and educators who are working with children in the spectrum.

A recent award-winner, I Am In Here: The Journey of a Child with Autism Who Cannot Speak but Finds Her Voice, is a riveting memoir about a thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Bonker. Elizabeth is severely affected by austim and though she can't speak, she gives us powerful insight as to what it's like to live in the inner world of autism through her poetry that she writes by typing one character at a time.

We are inspired by Elizabeth’s courage, determination, and optimism, and by the relentless love of a mom who always knew her daughter was “in there.”
